My story as a stained glass artist
When I was in my early teenage years, my father purchased an old stained glass window from an estate sale. My mother desired that the stained glass window would fit in the window above the kitchen sink, but the window was not wide enough, so my dad and I read about how to add glass to the existing stained glass. We purchased the products needed; the glass we wanted to add, the lead came, the soldering iron, solder, and flux. I had no idea at the time that I was beginning a journey in stained glass that continues to this day, 45 years later.
I began in those early years to create stained glass projects, including additional windows for my kitchen, and a hanging lamp for that same kitchen. My teenage years took me in different directions and I focused on college and post-graduate school where I became a Doctor of Chiropractic. I didn't create any further projects until many years later after I married.
After my marriage and beginning my chiropractic business in the early 90's I created a stained glass studio in my garage and continued making some small projects; suncatchers, small windows, and a lampshade. But once children came on the scene, life's demands shifted away from stained glass and my focus fell upon raising my kids and running a business.
This brings us to current time. My wife and I are empty-nesters. The kids are out of the house and my passion for stained glass was reignited. I created my own workshop and began creating Tiffany-style lamps again. And with this, I decided to begin my own stained glass business with the purpose of creating lamps for the public, and being commissioned as a stained glass artist, primarily for custom-made stained glass lamps.
Currently my lamp production is part-time as I continue to have a very busy chiropractic practice in Castro Valley, CA. (www.jamesonchiro.com).
What's next? My wife and I love Hawaii and the tropical plants of the Hawaiian islands. I will be creating a line of tropical flower lampshades, custom made and custom designed.
